A family winery in the heart of Victoria
The winery is run by Matt and Luise Fowles, with their daughters Lilli, Mathilda and Ella, who help out where they can. Their home on the vineyard is shared with two pigs, nine chickens, eight guinea fowl, four cats, two dogs and a flock of about 6000 sheep! This next generation wine family are next generation thinkers, hence Fowles DIY.
Our winery is a 15-minute drive from the Hume Freeway on Upton Road in the Strathbogie Ranges. Sitting next to our family vineyards and perched on top of a hill overlooking the central Victoria plains, it is here that we cultivate curiosity. Chief Winemaker Lindsay Brown applies ancient wisdom to modern winemaking, with a full suite of winemaking tools and gadgetry, including a barrel hall with over 1000 barrels including some that are 140 years old!
The Strathbogie Ranges are located 100 kilometres north of Melbourne. The ruggedly beautiful massif sits almost 600 metres above sea level and is characterised by ancient granite boulders dating back over 360 million years. A huge granite peninsula, pushed up from the ocean, the Strathbogie Ranges has emerged as a truly distinct, high-altitude and cool climate region, helping us to produce intense wines that are elegant and full of character.
Cool climate wines
Fowles Wine own and manage 360 acres of vines across two vineyards called Upton Run and Billi's in the Strathbogie Ranges. Fowles Wine has a wide variety of plantings including: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Arneis, Vermentino, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Merlot, Shiraz, Mouvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon. The style and character of Fowles Wine reflects our cool climate home. Our white wines have great fruit intensity, minerality and are light and fresh. Our red wines are highly perfumed, intensely coloured and powerful, yet restrained and elegant.
